  • New Yorker Cartoonist, Pat Byr New Yorker Cartoonist, Pat Byrnes

    • From: FearNoART
    • Description:

As a cartoonist, one can't aspire any higher than The New Yorker.  So it was very exciting to sit down for Fear No ART with New Yorker cartoonist Pat Byrnes in his home studio.   In the video below, Pat maps out the critical elements in his cartoons and his routine with The New Yorker.   He also explains the components necessary for a good cartoon and how being a cartoonist is a calling, not something one can really plan on becoming.

Pat keeps a small orange notebook on him at all times and jots down idea after idea after idea.  Oddly, most successful cartoons don't come from life playing out perfectly in front of him, but rather twists and variations of scenarios.

In addition to his cartoons and books, Pat is also working on an app called, "Smurks" which maps out the range of human emotion and which psychologists are using to help autistic patients express themselves.   This app has been a very exciting breakthrough and officially makes this stay-at-home Dad one of the busiest artists around.

I have painted many paintings that I thought were masterpieces, but turned out to be bombs.    This is like a stand-up comedian telling jokes and looking at his audence who are sitting with their hands folded on their tables.  That must be a worse feeling.  I cannot share those painting with you because they were painted over with another work.  Ellis.

  • Are Artists Hard Too Love? Are Artists Hard Too Love?

    • From: ellisgperl
    • Description:

I have the belief that the more talented and successful an artist is the more off the wall that person is.  In viewing bios of talented people in the arts, I sense that they are all a little crazy and not in a good way.  This behavior probably comes from their childhood, or a life changing experience.  I just viewed the bio of Jackie  Gleason, a gifted actor, comedian and musician.   He had a terrible childhood.  This reflected on him as an older person even though

  • Amber... Amber...

    • From: sogolo
    • Description:

Amber dreamed of stardom. She was told she had the look and talent to make it. After winning titles such as Our Miss Personable, Holiday Queen of Belvedere Mountain and Miss New Teen she knew she must head to Hollywood.
Her parents Bruce and Rene agreed. They always knew that Amber was special. They knew it when they both looked at each other and nodded during Amber’s performance in the Carter Public School talent show. At age 6 she sang the show tune classic “Night may be dark, but my days are bright”.  Her performance was so moving one lunch room attendant cried. In the show’s second act, Amber had the audience in stitches when she donned an oversize newsboy cap and floppy plaid bow tie and imitated the great 1930’s comedian Sorrowful O’Brien.  She even recreated his famous “But that’s what they told me!” routine.  From that day forwarded a theatrical career seemed inevitable. It was further confirmed when it was her turn to glisten during the swimsuit portion of the Miss Passion Fruit beauty pageant sponsored by Summer Radiance Tanning Solutions. Although it made Bruce uncomfortable seeing how the men in the audience reacted, he understood that hers was a beauty that could not be ignored. Landing bit parts in films like “The House by Blood Swamp” and “Freshman Winter Recess 3: The Race Is On” made her a legend back home and even more determined to succeed.  Being seen in Nu-View magazine photos “dating” hot young rock star Derek King further increased her visibility as a face on the rise.
It was just a matter of time.

false start...i went to cody high school, in detroit, mi, in the early 70's...our claims to fame were the fact that Sarah Vaughn was an alumnus, and a race riot bad enough to make Walter Cronkite's evening news...truth be told, it started as a drug deal gone bad...it just kinda evoloved into a racial thing...the seventies experienced a fairly bad recession which resulted in job losses and school program cut-backs...which is why i wound up in journalism, rather than art...the art program was cut to one class taught by a clearly over-stressed teacher...it had once been a good art department, but those days were gone by '73...so i wrote...for the cody star...technically i was a reporter, but i tended to be more of a columnist...in any case, it provided a creative outlet and i was good at it...so when decisions had to be made about college it seemed natural to pursue journalism...in the post-watergate years, journalists were looked at as heroes...and my blue-collar background told me there was a better income to be made in journalism, than in art...at least that's what nearly everyone told me...i had won a full four year scholarship through my SAT scores to any college or university in michigan...it covered all tuition and school related fees...i just needed money for books, housing and transportation...easy, right?...well my dad's job was cut just days before high school graduation...this drastically changed things...in stead of u of m where i would need housing, i wound up at the university of detroit...i was able to live with my parents, which cut expenses, but still needed an income...my cousin got me a job at Bank of the Commonwealth, afternoon shift, full-time...the income eased the financial burden on my folks, but as time went on, placed far too much burden on an 18 year old...journalism school was disillusioning...instead of being heroes supporting truth and justice, it turned out they just had to fill space in a paper to please advertisers...further, they were required to slant stories to please those advertisers...i was drawn by heroism, only to be taught to sell out...by the end of the first year i knew i did not want to be a journalist...but what did i want to be?...added to these factors, it was a year of death...my favorite aunt [clara] died of cancer...then my surrogate grandmother, a sweet old woman who lived across the street from us, named mrs. ray...a close friend from high school committed suicide one day after begging me, that morning, to take the day off and just 'hang out'...i couldn't, it was mid-terms...and i couldn't call in to work...this left me with a lingering feeling of guilt that took years to shake off...freddie prinze, the comedian, committed suicide, and the media would not shut up about it...and finally, a student who was on an athletic scholarship for basketball [ u of d had a great b ball team back then], after failing his psych 101 final exam, thus losing his scholarship and place on the team, climbed the clock tower and jumped to his death, with myself and at least 100 other students watching...with all of these events swirling around me, i started to realize i was gay...which was definitely not ok in the catholic, blue collar environment i was living in...i knew the scholarship was important...but it was all too much...my grades were not an issue, i've always been an A&B student...i just lost my direction...school counselors were useless...i needed guidance in finding my major, and all they gave me were course requirements...the catalogue gave that information!...anyway, much to my parents dismay, and with heavy eyes of judgement cast upon me by my father's family i walked away from college and my scholarship...that's when the rumors of substance abuse started circulating...i let my hair grow long..job hopped...hit the road...smoked some weed...tried most of the drugs of the day...i was depressed, but no one saw that...i didn't have enough money to do any drugs on a regular basis...but that was a juicier explanation for my behavior...and "have you seen the wierd drawings he's doing?  he must be doing drugs"...surrealism had not caught on in the baginski clan...expressionism, what's that?...

Today was really quiet at work, most of the office was out and it was kind of still. I caught up on a bunch of things. Tonight, Gina made a shepherd’s pie, it was outstanding. I never knew I could enjoy one so much! She said the secret was using a rutabaga in the potato topping; we also used my favorite, ground Turkey.

Today in the news, House legislation for the Health Care Bill will coat at least $1 trillion over a decade, significantly higher than President Obama's target; Authorities are seeking help in identifying a teenage girl who mysteriously turned up in Manhattan two weeks ago, claiming to have no memory of her family, her home or even her own name; the Senate passed groundbreaking legislation that would make it a federal crime to assault an individual because of his or her sexual orientation or gender identity.

Today was talk show host legend Johnny Carson’s birthday and master parody singer/songwriter Weird Al Yankovic’s birthday. Today comedian Soupy Sales died at age 83.
