Do we really want artists like Koons to be a cultural reporter for our age? His work doesn't speak to anything relevant in my life or art (photography). I think he's a great marketer though and you can't blame him for making a buck. I do think he is taking up space that could be filled with a more talented artist (figuratively and literally speaking).

Scott...it's not the artists I don't like....it's their art...ha. And I'm really not that critical or cynical. I don't like Raushenberg's "Goat" (sorry...had to mention it again), Duchamps urinal art or what's his name's "Piss Christ" (I don't even like typing the title).

Hopper's paintings are awesome. His work reminds me of Rockwell's, only less whimsical. I have a huge piece of art hanging in my family room that is based on Hopper's "Nighthawks 1942".  It's like a flat screen TV

I love art and have lot's of stuff hanging on my walls! We have a huge poster of the Rafael "Cherubs" that has hung above our bed for 15 years. The frame cost 20 times more than the poster...but I like it.

I also have drawings of Stephen King's home in Bangor,Maine and one of Mickey Mantle (signed by Mantle) that hung in a New York restaurant. Both are signed by the artist and limited editions. Love em.

      "A Boy Named James"

Every man is doomed, and destined once to die...

yet imagine dying twice, before your time draws nigh.

Little James died first, when he was a lad of just nine.

Then died once more, when his car crossed that line.

He suffered great pain, when his dear mother perished.

Her love and affection, was all that he cherished.

James’ father then killed him, when he sent him away.

No love left for James Dean, so he lived dead everyday.

Some called him a rebel, with deep bouts of sorrow.

Being a rebel comes easy, when you have no tomorrow.

A sad broken life, and a fast broken death.

He was already dead, when he took his last breath.

      He is doing a sculpture to go with my James Dean graphic ( the creepy thing here is that I found him in his race car in EXACTLY the same position as his wreck... so the straight car and the wrecked car are superimposed in this graphic (The give away is if you look at the wheel in the bottom right corner because you can see the original and the crash!);

    • Description:

large composite townscape of the intellectual, yuppy, Cambridge-like college town of Chapel Hill.

Depicted are about 50 buildings, some of which are on the national historic register, along with a representation of the

ceremony dedicating East Hall as such, with Adlai Stevenson speaking and the rival West Hall residents unveiling a banner

reading, "National Landmark My Arse," just as Stevenson begins to speak.  This story was told to me by one of the culprits

who participated in the "crime," my high school art teacher, Harry Blair.

Included among structures are the Bell Tower, the Dean Smith Center, Davis and Wilson Libraries, Morehead Planetarium and several

landmarks located on Franklin Street.  James Taylor is singing to a crowd and Emmylou Harris is driving a red VW, looking

for a place to park.  A homeless man is depicted imprisoned inside the bank.

      James Dean

      (From our People search)

The career and life of James Dean was all too brief. His feature film acting credits rest on only three films: East of Eden (1955), Rebel Without a Cause (1955), and Giant (1956). Born in Indiana in 1931, Dean lived in California with his family until the death of his mother, when he was nine years old. His father sent him back to Indiana to live with relatives, where he finished high school excelling in athletics, debate, and drama. Dean moved back to California and attended UCLA to study acting. He quit school to spend more time auditioning, and like many aspiring actors, supported himself as a parking lot attendant and through other odd jobs. It was only after moving to New York City in 1951 that Dean's career took off. He first appeared on Broadway in See the Jaguar, and also joined the Actors Studio where he met Elia Kazan. After an acclaimed performance run on Broadway in The Immoralist (1954), Kazan asked him to do a screen test for an adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel East of Eden. Dean's persona tapped into the zeitgeist of post-war American youth in a phenomenal way. His sensitivity, anger, and alienation made him a touchstone that continues to be relevant to this day. Dean was an avid race car enthusiast and it was on the way to a race in Salinas, California that James Dean was killed in a head-on collision on September 30th, 1955. Dean received two posthumous Best Actor nominations for his roles in East of Eden and Giant.

Quote: "If a man can bridge the gap between life and death, . if he can live on after he's dead, then maybe he was a great man."

Factoid (according to AlternativeReel.com): Approximately two hours before his fatal car crash, James Dean received a speeding ticket for driving 75 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone. He shrugged it off and sped off down the highway.

  • JAMES DEAN DRAWING JAMES DEAN DRAWING

    • From: DaleCrum
    • Description:
I did this graphite drawing way back in 1981 for my Dad, Bob Crum, who was one of those diehard James Dean fans. Pop went to school with Elvis at Humes High in Memphis, where I grew up. He was one of those 'Cool Cats' that hung out with Elvis. I love his stories about those days! When JD died my Pop had this scrapbook he had put together of every clipping he could find---he gave it to Elvis (who was a huge JD fan too) as a gift after JD's death---so I thought Pop deserved a JD portrait from me! So there it is.
