New piece in progress...started with vague idea of a large happy face...then a vulture showed up and a few days later Prometheus character showed up...in greek hagiography Prometheus stole light from the Gods and gave it to man...he was punished by being chained to a rock doomed to have his liver eaten daily by a vulture...live regrew each night... so what does it mean here Prometheus chained to the empty falseness of a smiley face for moving beyond empty illusion??? hmm...I'll keep thinking and sculpting and see what the Muse suggests... as usual this is built with Imco paper clay and will be fired to cone 6

Do Not Play On Their Turf Do Not Play On Their Turf
- From: ArtToones

Description:
Here's a reverse shot of the Big Brother piece...on the back of the head it becomes a globe...look close you can see the outline of north and southamerica...covered in faces...I couldn't resist where California should be I place a set of large plastic surgery tits...the rabbit is horrified and attempting an escape...you can also see some of the many smaller figures that create a hedge around the turf...the large fish, fleshless is an image I use for a failed church or ministry...its drydocked no water either ...you can see the back of a little girl with hands on hips...I'll post some other detail shots soon...as I had a lot of fun doing all those little figures...

Description:
Here's the finished "BigHead"...(See previous pictures of it in process) Title: " Do Not Play on Their Turf" This is large 41"x32"x20"...as usual stoneware paper clay, cone 6. This one started rather vaguely out of a general angst at the cockeyed world we live in ..so a big cockeyed head emerged from the clay with the back of the head being a globe...at one point there was a pedestal ontop of the head with a Venus de Milo looking worried...but eventually I scrapped that and added a cushion on which I intended to drape a naked one-winged angel...well that turned into a dead?,dying?, anesthetized?, drugged? blinded? Statue of Liberty and her cushion turned into an octopus! Ain't the Muse got a sense of humor? So there's the main image and next came a bed of encrusted tiles for it to emerge from...but didn't like the tiles for that and ended using them for another piece...kept thinking its got to come out of the ground... had recently reread 1984 and came to understand this might be BIg Brother...then a friend in conversation said..."don't play on their turf"" ahha!! it was turf I needed...went to Home Depot they would sell me a roll , 15' by something for $300 plus!!!...finally found on line a nice sample kit of 6" x 6" pieces...which lead to the gameboard idea...see how the Muse works?....ordered 6 sample kits...next the company called me and wanted to be assurred that I would order no more sample kits...I sorta promised... It still need more ..a hedge a boundary, something... ...I had this series of figurative tiles 2" wide by about 12" long and about 5" high that I had done for another project that had just not worked out...and in this piece they finally found their home...all I needed now was scrabble tiles for the title...but they were overpriced on ebay...a drivebye garage sale yielded a scrabble game for 25 cents...love it when a plan comes together... then broke apart an old thrift store frame and reconfigured the wood for the base.
So here it is Big Brother, emerging from his gameboard turf...A sunglassed Liberty in a swoon attop, having dropped her torch and book ... a book no longer emblazoned with our Independence Date. She is cushioned from the reality/pain of it all by a camoflauged octopus offering a sickly dove of peace and various other useless gestures. In the rear the rabbit finally aware is escaping from the game...hedging the piece are numerous figures...pictures to follow...in stages of anesthesia or awakening...while a Thunderfoot, Hummel with attitude, hands on hips amused stands against it s monstrosity like Neo in the hallway empowered by knowing the reality of the program. Watcha thinka?? Catch something from the Muse I didn't...let me know... cheers

Tidy JESTure Tidy JESTure

Description:
You can see this sculpture during the upcoming Studio Tour sponsored by the Ceramic Research Center in Phoenix...that will be the last weekend in February Here's three photos of a sculpture I worked on three years....on and off....I call it "Tidy JESTure" It is ceramic and bronze with the assemblage of the aluminum trashcan which I patinaed and decaled to add to its angst. Here the Empty JESTure wearing his happy/smiley face makeup is attempting to tidy up his life ...as usual he has no arms to take any real action, but as always that doesn't stop him from causing all kinds of mayhem with his JESTure hat... he weilds a pair of scissors , a dustpan and broom attempting to sweep the art that he has but from the window shade out of his life...bow to Magritte here... the JESTure is ceramic as is the base the hands with dustpan and scissors are bronze and the wall, window and shade are also bronze; on the other side of the window wall ...the wall is alive with art, angst, question, etc. Try as he might to remove art ....the walls will come alive with it...the rabbit is either escaping or entering wonderland...or through the looking glass...you can find alice and the rabbit in the wall too and perhaps even the queen of hearts...
