Sure, Chihuly is an artist. It's his vision, he's directing these other people. Without him, his creations would not come into existence. If somebody does something he doesn't like, he nixes it. Just because other people are involved doesn't negate his cred as an artist. Plus, the large scale glassblowing isn't quite feasible for just one person. All the Great Master painters had assistants they directed. It's like he's got ten arms instead of two.

For the most part, Hirst is not my cup of tea. The vivisection of the shark, the skull with the diamonds...There's a wave of hype and an excitement of huge piles of money involved that seems to propel these ideas -- some might call them gimmicks. (certainly money and hype should not be confused with artistic excellence) But then I have to go back to Duchamp and that bicycle wheel attached to that stool. There's certainly more idea behind that one than some grand vision realized through craftsmanship. I t
