My name is Beth, I am a fabric addict and I love to make crafts and I have Cerebral Palsy... it makes what I do a challenge, but I like challenges.
What initially sparked your interest in creating your craft?
I’ve always been interested in art and crafts in particular. I have always loved working with fabric and needle work. Ever since I was a very young child, I’ve enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, cross stitch and embroidery. I learned how to read patterns to make bags and pillows while taking Home Ec. in High School. Using these skills I taught myself to make cloth dolls and other soft toys.
How did you learn your particular style of craftsmanship?
I had some wonderful teachers over the years to learn more about sewing and designing what I sew. My Mother, Grandmothers, and a talented group of quilters and other artists taught me everything I know about sewing in general.
Did anyone mentor or encourage you?
My Mother, Grandmothers, and a talented group of quilters and other artists taught me everything I know about sewing in general. My family and friends are very supportive and encouraging.
Have you always "had a knack" for creating things?
Yes, I believe I have always "had a knack" for creating things. I have always been encouraged to use my imagination.
Do you do this as a full-time job?
I wouldn’t really call it a job. It is more of a full time hobby and passion that borders on obsession.
What else do you do besides crafts?
Besides crafts, I also write short stories, watch movies, listen to music, and I am endlessly amused by my two dogs, Babber Kaye and Nibbler.
Did you just begin selling your crafts? If so, what made you decide to start your business?
I began selling my crafts in 2001, at a craft fair sponsored by a small church I worked at. In 2004, I began selling online with my own website showcasing custom made art dolls and animals. I have been selling on Etsy since March, 2008.
How I got to be Berry Blue Creations:
When I really got serious about crafting and hopefully making some extra money with it, I tried different names: my own name, which though a good name, just wasn't original enough for what I make. So I tried "Purple Monkey Creations" in honor of the first stuffed animal I ever made. Then I found out somebody else was using that one. I searched every search engine for a long time, trying different names... until I had the "AHA" moment... Berry Blue was used in product names, but NOT as A company or Studio Name... so I picked it up. And the rest is history.
