 My name is Brenda M. Higginson, I grew up a California girl but in my twenties and thirties I ended up all over the country.  i worked in Yellowstone National Park, a ski resort, an island in Florida, a small college town in Missouri.  But I may be coming back to roost after twenty years.

    I love the start of a new painting, where all the possibilities exist and are waiting for you to choose.  The work I've done is filled with bright color and I like to find a shape: woman,tree, fish, whatever, and build a complex world around that subject.  But every now and then I make myself reign in the crazy and keep it simple.  But just every now and then.The colors I use I select for their  gut wrenching factor.  If I look at a shade of orange and something in my belly,heart and mind contract I know that it's a damn fine shade of orange. 

     My work is intensely vibrant with use of heavy outline and luminescent qualities.  I say I stop painting when the piece starts to glow.   I'm self taught which presents challenges and rewards.  I don't know the rules which means I paint without barriers.  But when I struggle with an awkward eye,a stiff limb, an uneven mouth I wish I'd had core structures laid down.  But life is meant to be explored and i feel I'm doing that whith each new piece.

Artist Statement
Art should be bright and beautifull even when it's ugly. Art should reveal to us things not seen before or present the known in a new way. I can take a picture of reality, I want to paint leaps of imagination.

Primary Influences
I love Van Gogh so dearly, like everyonel. He makes my heart ache. Klimt destroys me with the beauty of his skin tones and how he fills each space of a painting with those flowers or squares building up texture and complexity.

Recent/Upcoming Exhibition or Performance
My latest performance consists of me sitting in a chair day after day, hoping and dreaming and little else.

Favorite Medium
acrylic, so bright and easy to clean up.
