Paired with this poem for the Words & Image contest:
Near the weathered barn
Now gilded by dusk’s setting sun,
I sprawl in the golden hay.
Captured in each stalk
Is the scent of summer.
It brings me peace.
The energy of the earth
Rises, merges with my own,
Draws me into its rhythm.
I rotate on its axis,
Orbit through space,
Captured by its invisible hand,
Safe from all harm.
Through half-shuttered eyes
I see life. I hear life, breathe in life.
I count the early stars as sun slips,
Feel the Dipper spill celestial joy.
I listen to frogs, staccato in the fleeting light.
The breath of a bat’s wings
Caresses my face, it comes so close.
I am the hay, gleaming, serene,
A bit of summer in my own right,
Gilded briefly by dusk’s setting sun.
