Nothing Remotely Redeemable by Allen Henriquez

Part XIX

In our society there are many honorable professions and when done properly should be admired.  However the irony is, the most glorified and romanticized, is the antisocial groups or gangs who commit crimes.  The multitude of books, films and fashion designed as a tribute document that fact.  The solemn reverence toward gangsters includes the criminal code of solidarity and silence.  But from Anna Sage “The Woman in Red” setting up John Dillinger, to Joe Valachi exposing the organization he was employed by, to all the lesser names, or not known street criminals of present day, reveal the truth of the criminal crew or team before self, myth.

Detectives Haberstem and Carter pulled from Horace Akers all that he knew, but he couldn’t tell them that which would make their investigation complete.  Horace knew that Kelly Samuels did the extra work, work that was extreme, but he’d never heard any orders to kill or witnessed any acts of murder, requested or ordered by Reed Ober or the acting on them by Kelly Samuels.  It would be very hard to convict Reed Ober because in the presence of others he would order Samuels to talk to this person or that person only twice did those talks end with someone dead.  Horace stated that, yes, there is a very cavalier attitude in how Reed runs his distribution of drugs on the small scale that he was dealing them, but that was another part of his cover, along with the candy store.  He used those things to cover for the greater profit which was the gambling.  Sure they could pin point the murders to Reed and his candy store crew, but they had no proof, and no murder case against them.

The detectives were done with Akers and were going over their strategy moving forward when they received word that they had a Zachary Jensen on the premises, wanting to speak to them.  Zachary explained what happened to him at the construction site, feeling that Kelly was trying to kill him.  The music of Zachary’s statement was pleasant and timely for the detectives but with no foundation.

“What motive would he have to kill you? He doesn’t even know you?” Carter.

“He works for Reed Ober, and Reed has an obsession for Trudy Larkins.  He’s already murdered her husband and son.” Zachary.

The detectives look at each other in shock.
