Art Instructors insults

I just read a profile of a new member where remarked about an art instructors comments that this person should not create art.  I had an experience with an art teacher in high school where he gave me a hard time about NOT using a ruler on my assignments.  He even went so far as to embarrass me in front of the rest of the class about it.

25 years later I can freehand a pretty damn good straight line.  I will say that I do recommend using straight edges when doing serious pieces....however my point is that....as I have always believed......"don't be restrained by the rules and tools of the trade".   It's ok to step out and "do" different..."be" different.

Without the "out of the box" thinking.....we would still be drawing on cave walls.

  • There are no rulers, straight edges or templates for the beginner of fine art...there are no" straight" lines on a tree. let the artist experience the mediums...When you are dealing with the graphic arts, the scene changes as does some of the methods. There are no rules to fine art. Everyone does it their way....Some teachers like to impose their will but this is not a teaching method....WE are taught to teach methods, not rules.....

  • While I was in college my art instructors constantly gave me grief.  One of them wanted to draw on my finished work.  I told him that if he touched pencil to paper I would break all of his fingers. This was not smart of me, but the teacher never attempted to place his pencil on my work. To this day I am not fond of art teachers. This teacher should have brought his own paper to draw on.  I'm just sayin',   ellis.

  • If an art instructor is trying to teach the basic tools and the student has no desire to learn then I would understand the instructors comments.  There is a time for conformity and a time for freelance, we need to learn the difference.

  • I do believe most educators have the right intent but every once in awhile one gets thru with the wrong attitude towards students.

That statement about not knowing the rules/tools is brilliant!

  • Good point Cheryl....but.....it's how the rules and tools are presented and how the novice is treated that make the difference.
